Editorial Policy

Last updated: August 31, 2026

BriefTop is committed to journalism that is accurate, fair, transparent, responsible, and useful. This Editorial Policy describes the standards we aim to apply to news gathering, writing, editing, publication, and correction.

Accuracy and Verification

We aim to verify material facts before publication using reliable evidence. Verification may include reviewing primary documents, official statements, public records, direct interviews, reputable reporting, photographs, video, data, or other credible source material.

When facts cannot be independently confirmed, we aim to make the level of certainty clear and attribute claims to the appropriate source.

Primary and Secondary Sources

Whenever practical, BriefTop favors primary sources such as government agencies, courts, law-enforcement agencies, public records, regulatory filings, company disclosures, official representatives, research institutions, and direct interviews. Reputable secondary sources may be used for confirmation, context, or developments that cannot reasonably be obtained directly.

Attribution and Anonymous Sources

Information should be attributed when attribution helps readers evaluate its reliability. Anonymous sourcing may be used when there is a legitimate reason to protect a source and the information is considered sufficiently important and credible. We aim to independently corroborate sensitive claims whenever reasonably possible.

Breaking and Developing News

Breaking stories can change rapidly. Early reports may be incomplete, and authorities or organizations may revise initial information. BriefTop may update headlines, text, timelines, photographs, or other details as verified information becomes available. Material changes may be disclosed through an update, clarification, correction, or editor’s note.

Headlines, Thumbnails, and Social Media

Headlines and promotional text should accurately reflect the substance of the underlying article. We aim to avoid headlines, thumbnails, captions, or social posts that materially misrepresent what the reporting establishes.

Fairness and Context

Fair reporting does not require treating every claim as equally credible. It does require representing relevant facts and viewpoints accurately, providing appropriate context, and giving individuals or organizations a reasonable opportunity to respond when serious allegations concern them and circumstances permit.

Opinion, Analysis, and News

News reporting should be distinguishable from opinion or commentary. Analysis may include interpretation based on established facts, while opinion reflects the author’s viewpoint. Where appropriate, such material should be labeled so readers understand its nature.

Crime, Accidents, and Sensitive Events

Coverage involving deaths, injuries, minors, victims, allegations, or traumatic events should be handled with appropriate care. Being named by police, accused, arrested, or charged does not establish guilt. When relevant, BriefTop aims to use language that respects due process and avoids presenting allegations as proven facts.

Images and User-Generated Material

Photographs, video, screenshots, social posts, and other user-generated material should be evaluated for authenticity, context, relevance, and rights considerations before publication. Visual material should not be intentionally altered or presented in a way that materially misleads readers.

Artificial Intelligence

BriefTop may use AI-assisted tools for limited editorial support, including organizing research, transcription, translation, editing assistance, or summarizing source material. AI output is not considered a verified source. Material intended for publication should receive appropriate human editorial review for factual accuracy, sourcing, context, and quality.

Conflicts of Interest

Writers and editors should avoid undisclosed financial, personal, or professional conflicts that could reasonably compromise editorial independence. Relevant conflicts should be disclosed or managed appropriately.

Advertising and Sponsored Content

Advertisers, sponsors, and commercial partners should not control independent news conclusions. Sponsored or paid material should be labeled so that a reasonable reader can distinguish it from independent editorial coverage.

Plagiarism and Originality

BriefTop does not support plagiarism. Reporting from other publications should be appropriately attributed, and third-party material should not be presented as our original work. Our articles should add original reporting, context, synthesis, explanation, or other meaningful value where appropriate.

Corrections

When a significant factual error is confirmed, BriefTop aims to correct it promptly and transparently. The nature of the correction depends on the seriousness of the error and is governed by our Corrections Policy.
